Cannabis, airports, and crossing borders
One rule covers both directions: cannabis stays in Thailand.
As of 2026, never carry cannabis across Thailand's borders in either direction. Taking cannabis across an international border is a serious offense, even if cannabis is legal where you are headed, and the same rule applies to bringing cannabis into Thailand from abroad. Anything you buy legally in Thailand must be used or disposed of before you leave the country. The only legal route to cannabis flower runs inside Thailand: a PT33 prescription from a licensed Thai practitioner and an in-person purchase at a licensed dispensary, age 20 and over.
One rule, both directions
Everything in this guide comes down to one rule: cannabis does not cross Thailand's borders. Carrying cannabis across an international border is a serious offense, even if cannabis is legal where you are headed. The rule works in both directions, so it shapes what you do before you land in Thailand and before you fly out.
Leaving Thailand. Whatever you have bought legally here stays here. Never take cannabis across international borders when you leave; finish or dispose of any product before departure. That applies to any cannabis product, and no destination makes it acceptable.
Arriving in Thailand. The same across-borders rule applies on the way in: do not bring cannabis or cannabis products into Thailand from abroad. Thailand regulates cannabis through its own licensed, prescription-based system, and the legal route starts inside the country. If you hope to use cannabis during your stay, arrive without it and follow the medical route here: a consultation, a prescription on form PT33 from a licensed Thai practitioner, and an in-person purchase at a licensed dispensary, age 20 and over.
The travel rules at a glance
Buy and use it inside Thailand
The legal route runs entirely within the country: a PT33 prescription from a licensed Thai practitioner, an in-person purchase at a licensed dispensary, age 20 and over.
Finish or dispose before you fly
Use up or dispose of any cannabis product you have bought before you head to the airport.
Never pack it in any luggage
Cannabis does not belong in a checked bag, a carry-on, or a pocket on any trip that crosses a border.
Never bring cannabis into Thailand
The border rule works both ways, so do not carry cannabis or cannabis products into the country from abroad.
